Rogers to Release $10 “Unlimited U.S. Text Message Pass”

Rogers is getting ready to release a $10 unlimited U.S. text messaging pass for $10.  Official launch date is unknown but it is expected to include messages sent in Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Alaska, and continental US.

Rogers’ current travel pack is $12.50 for 25 sent text messages-ouch!

New Shaw Internet Packages

After public backlash to their proposed usage based billing (UBB) internet pricing Shaw completed 34 town hall meetings across the country to hear what their customers wanted.  Shaw compiled the information obtained from the meetings and developed the two stage plan that will changed the focus from their television offerings to the internet.

Shaw has decided to convert all analog television tiers to digital programming.  This huge undertaking will triple the capacity of the network, leaving more room for Internet, HD and On Demand programming.  The conversion will occur neighborhood by neighborhood starting in August 2011 and will take 16 months to complete.   Read more »

Bell Mobility Unlimited BC

Competition is finally starting to heat up in Canada’s wireless industry.  Residents in British Columbia can snag themselves the $45/month “Unlimited BC” plan until June 30, 2011.

The plan includes unlimited local and long distance calling within BC, call waiting, and conference calling-text messaging can be added for $5/month.  Voicemail, caller id, and data are also extra.

Note a $35 one time activate fee also applies.

Nokia C7-00

Videotron has released the Nokia C7-00 for $89.95 (on contract) or $439.95 contract free.

The Symbian^3 OS features a 3.5″ touch screen display, 8 MP camera (records 720p HD video), and Wi-Fi. The device comes preloaded with OVI maps which offers free turn by turn GPS navigation.

Consumer Internet Traffic

Here is an interesting chart from The Economist which shows the estimated internet usage for users around the world. The data is from Cisco’s annual Visual Networking Index, which was published at the beginning of the month.

Canada’s estimated consumer internet traffic was just shy of 10GB per person, a figure that is predicted to grow to over 30GB by 2015.  In 2010, internet video traffic was up from 19% is 2009 to 24% which totaled 8 billion minutes (14,896 years) being watched each month.  Mobile data traffic grew 150% in 2010.
